{Harper's POV}
I stepped up to the last step of the large house where I'd be living from now on. I reached out and rung the doorbell. As I shifted the bag on my shoulder I waited for someone to answer the door.
The large wooden door opened and there stood a little old lady. But she stood like she was much younger, and livelier than a little old lady.
"You must be Harper, nice to meet you, I'm Grandma Park. Please, come in!"
I bowed slightly and followed the grandma into the house.
The inside of the house was large and felt like I was transported back in time. It had high, vaulted ceilings and stairwells that led into many hallways, where I assumed many doorways. I was itching to go explore the place. But the grandma's voice brought me back to attention.
"You'll be living in the daisy room, I'll think you'll enjoy it," she said with a knowing smile.
Unsure what she was trying to say I just smiled, professionally of course, back.
"It's up that first stairwell, to the left, the door with a number 7 on it. Why don't you put your bags down and settle down, you can come down for dinner at six."
I thanked her again and followed her directions. As soon as I opened the door I understood the name. The walls were covered in a slightly faded daisy wallpaper. The room had a light green and yellow colour scheme and it suited me nicely. I threw my bags down on the bed and wondered what the grandma had been talking about when she said, 'I think you'll enjoy it."
I walked around the perimeter of the room and studied how soundproof it was, since I'd be working on catching that Busan gang I didn't need the other girls to be listening in. Since the house was old the walls were thing and sound could travel easily. I'd have to come up with some way to muffle the sounds better.
I walked over to the window, it had a perfect view of all of Taeyang street.
"Perfect," I muttered.
Still trying to figure out why the room will make me enjoy it, I paced around the room.
After a few minutes of circling the room I leaned against the dresser exasperated. My elbow bumped the books on top of it and suddenly the wall next to it slid aside revealing a passageway.
My eyes lit up with excitement, so that's what the lady had been talking about!
Although I kept a very strict and cautious attitude about my work, I still reverted back to my childish-nancy drew reading-self. Only in the comfort of my own home of course, and this would be my new home.
Grabbing my ultra-bright flashlight, my notebook and pencil, and a jacket to protect my clothes from the cobwebs, from my suitcase I headed into the passage way. I had to slouch a little to get past the doorway but as I moved further in I was able to straighten. The light from the room slowly faded and I turned on the flashlight. The tunnel continued for about another three minutes until I met a door. The door opened up into a small circular area with a series of doors and smaller tunnels.
Before me the doors where numbered. I thought for a while, Grandma told me my room was number seven, the other rooms must have numbers as well. So the numbers on these doors must correspond to the numbers of the rooms they led into. I turned around to look at the door I had com through and sure enough it had the number 7 on it. The doors must lead to passageways into the rooms like the one I came through. They might open in different ways though.
I quickly opened my notebook and drew the circle area I stood in now then added the passageway I came through. I labeled everything I could and I had about a fourth of a map drawn. I'd have to explore all the other tunnels. But my watched said that it was almost six o'clock and I had to get back to my room.
Sighing, I returned back into the passageway that lead to my room. On my way out I noticed a lever on the inside of the passageway.
"This must open the passage from the inside," I said to myself, "the others should have this as well."
I stepped back into my room and slid the books back into place and the wall returned to normal leaving no evidence that it had ever moved.
As I changed for dinner I wonder if any of the other girls had found the passage ways. They must have because they've been living here way longer than I have. But maybe the grandma gave me this room for a reason, maybe it had the most obvious opening (the dresser's books) and the other rooms had it in harder places to find. All the questions swam around in my head and I was dying to figure it out all. My stomach growled and I reminded myself to eat first, snoop later.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
{A few days later}
I wanted to explore the passageways so badly but I had to be smart about it. I couldn't just pop in through some tunnel into girls' rooms while they're in there. So for the past few days I've been figuring out which girls stayed in which rooms. When a girl left the house I'd have to try their tunnel. But I'd have to be absolutely sure about it. So in the meantime I've been collecting information about TOP's gang. I called the police but they were of little help.
After my tenth call however, they agreed to send me a partner to work with me on the case. Finally, I'd be getting somewhere. The officer was supposed to be coming at ten am.
{ten am}
I walked out of the house in a beige trench coat, jeans and a white t-shirt. Perfect detective clothes. A bright, smiling guy leaned against the police car outside the house. Sure he filled out his uniform, quite nicely I had to admit, but his cute face seemed like the least place it should be was on a police officer's body.
I raised one eyebrow as I approached him, "Officer Jinki?"
"Yup that's me!" He smiled again.
I cringed on the inside and muttered, "I was afraid so." But I didn't let it show. I stuck out my hand and introduced myself.
"Harper Park."
He fistbumped my offered hand instead and said, "Harper, that's very american sounding. Are you from america?"
"No. Harper is my nickname. It's dangerous to use real names in my profession."
"I see," he nodded.
"So are we going to stand here chitcatting all day or are we going to actually do some investigating?"
"Oh, um yeah." He opened the passenger door and I slipped inside.
The car had a faint smell of... what was that? I couldn't seem to figure it out. It begun to bother me that I couldn't figure it out so I asked, "Officer Jinki, WHAT is that smell?"
"Call me Jinki, and," he paused slightly and reached into the back of the car causing the car to swerve slightly.
"Officer Jinki! Please concentrate on the road!"
He pulled his arm back into the front of the car bringing a box of fried chicken with him.
"Chicken?" I asked skeptically
"Mhmm, want a piece?"
"No thanks, I just ate breakfast," I said cooly. "Just take us to the school."
"No problem-o Miss Harper"
I sucked in a quick breath and rolled my eyes, then said under my breath "this is why I prefer to work alone."
